How to Stop Window Draughts Without Replacing Them

A cold line around the edge of a closed window is not something you should have to live with. If the room feels chilly, curtains move when the wind picks up, or you can hear traffic more clearly than usual, the problem is often a worn seal, poor window adjustment or a failed component – not a window that needs replacing.
Knowing how to stop window draughts starts with finding where the air is getting in. A quick cover-up may help for a few days, but the right repair restores warmth, improves comfort and can help reduce heating costs without the disruption of fitting new frames.
Find the source of the draught first
Before buying foam strips or applying sealant, check exactly where the draught is coming from. On a cold or windy day, slowly move the back of your hand around the opening sash, the corners of the frame, the handle side and where the glass meets the window. You may feel a clear cold spot or movement of air.
A thin piece of tissue can also help. Hold it close to the edges of the closed window. If it moves noticeably, there is likely to be a gap. Do not use a naked flame for this test. It is unnecessary and can be unsafe around curtains, blinds and household materials.

Open the window and inspect the rubber seals around the sash and frame. They should be soft, continuous and sitting securely in their groove. Look for cracks, hard sections, corners that have pulled away, or areas where the seal has become compressed flat.
Clean dirty seals with warm water and a mild detergent, then dry them properly. Dirt and grit can stop a sash from closing fully. If the seal is visibly damaged or no longer springs back, it normally needs replacing with the correct profile. Generic adhesive strips can provide a temporary improvement, but they are not always suitable for uPVC windows. If they are too thick, the window may not close or lock correctly. If they are too thin, the draught remains.
Correctly matched replacement gaskets are a better long-term repair. The profile matters, as seals vary between window systems. A specialist can identify the existing seal and fit a suitable replacement without changing the whole window.
Check whether the sash has dropped
A window can become draughty when the opening sash drops slightly on its hinges. This is common on older or frequently used casement windows. The handle may feel stiff, the sash may catch against the frame, or one corner may sit proud when the window is closed.
When a sash is out of alignment, it does not press evenly into the seal. Even a small gap can let in a surprising amount of cold air. Adjustment may be possible through the hinges, but it depends on the hinge type and the condition of the window. Forcing screws or making large adjustments without knowing the mechanism can make the problem worse.
In many cases, worn friction hinges are the real fault. Replacing them allows the sash to sit squarely again, close smoothly and make proper contact with the seals. This is usually far more cost-effective than replacing a complete window.
Make sure the handle and locking points pull the window tight
The handle does more than open and close the window. On a locking uPVC casement window, it operates a mechanism that pulls the sash against the frame at several points. If the handle does not fully turn, feels loose, or the locking points no longer engage properly, the seal may not be compressed enough to stop draughts.
Avoid repeatedly forcing a stiff handle. A failing gearbox or locking mechanism can eventually leave the window insecure or stuck shut. A repair engineer can assess whether the handle, espag mechanism, keeps or locking points need adjustment or replacement.
Draughts around the window frame and walls
If the air is coming from the outer edge of the frame rather than the opening sash, inspect the sealant between the frame and the brickwork or render. External silicone can perish over time, particularly on exposed elevations where wind, rain and sunlight take their toll.
Small cracks, gaps or sections that have detached from the wall can allow cold air and moisture behind the frame. The old sealant should be removed where necessary, the area cleaned and dried, then resealed with an exterior-grade product. Simply applying a fresh line over loose, dirty sealant rarely lasts.
Internal trim can also hide gaps around the fitting. If you can feel air from behind the trim, it is worth having the installation checked. This does not automatically mean the whole window has been fitted badly. It may be a localised sealing issue that can be repaired cleanly.
When the glass is the problem
Sometimes a room feels cold near a window, but there is no obvious air leak. Double-glazed units can fail when the perimeter seal between the panes breaks down. Common signs include mist, condensation or water droplets inside the glass unit. You may also notice that the inner pane feels much colder than surrounding windows.
A failed unit reduces insulation and can make the room uncomfortable, but the frame may still be in good condition. In many cases, the sealed glass unit can be replaced while keeping the existing uPVC frame and opening sash. This avoids the cost and mess of a full replacement window.
Do not confuse condensation on the room side of the glass with condensation between the panes. Surface condensation can be linked to indoor humidity, limited ventilation or cold weather. Moisture trapped inside the unit is a glazing failure.
Temporary ways to reduce a window draught
If you need a short-term improvement before a repair can be arranged, close curtains at dusk, use a properly fitted draught excluder where appropriate, and keep furniture away from radiators so heat can circulate. Thermal curtains can make a noticeable difference to comfort, especially in bedrooms and older properties.
Self-adhesive draught tape may help on a small, accessible gap, provided it does not prevent the window from closing and locking. Treat it as a temporary measure rather than a cure for a dropped sash, damaged hinge or failed locking mechanism. Never tape over drainage slots at the bottom of a uPVC frame. These allow rainwater to drain away and blocking them can create a different problem.

A professional repair is the sensible option when seals are damaged, the sash is catching or dropping, the handle will not lock correctly, or you have misted double glazing. These faults often overlap. For example, a window may feel draughty because worn hinges have stopped it compressing an otherwise serviceable seal.
